Hawai‘i
November 20-25, 2004

Our condo, Kanaloa at Kona

Our view ("partial ocean view", full ocean sound)

Our spider

Hawai‘i has ferrets, not squirrels

Yay!

Some plants around the grounds...

Sunset, day 2. This is at the Old Kona Airport State Park

Our car driving across the ā‘ā lava at Honokōhau

Snorkeling at Honokōhau

At Kealakekua Bay

Snorkeling at Kealakeua Bay

At the Painted Church

The Pacific waves make big splashes.

Happy Birthday Renée!

Near South Point, the southern-most point in the United States. Lots of ā‘ā lava...

A Scenic Point near Punalu‘u Beach Park

Punalu‘u Black Sand Beach

Huge mountains! (They're 3 inches tall)

You can't tell, but this is a sea turtle!

Look out for Renée!

The Kīlauea Iki crater

We hiked through the rain forest down to the crater 400ft below

And here is the crater floor, with steam vents.

The crater was formed in 1959 by a fissure eruption pouring lava into a "lava lake."

Hapu‘u ferns, unique to Hawai‘i

This road used to go farther, but it was inundated by pāhoehoe lava in April 2003.

Dystopia!

Sunset, day 4

Hōlei Sea Arch

Hot liquid magma, flowing down the hillside!

Inside the Thurston Lava Tube

Day 5: Hike into Waipi‘o Valley

We hiked down "the steepest road in this hemisphere" (25% grade) to the bottom of the valley

Inside the valley

A waterfall!

Looking up into the valley, along the river we crossed. We held our bags over our heads and waded through chest-deep water!

Waipi‘o Valley from the other side

Looking up into the valley

The cliff bordering the valley on the west side

Plants in the valley

Surfers!
